Methodology
Picking an eSIM plan should not require a spreadsheet. We built a recommendation system that starts with how you use data, then narrows the options to plans that fit your trip, your device, and your budget.
Our quiz and data calculator ask about the activities you plan to do while traveling: navigation, video calls, social media uploads, music streaming, and general browsing. Each activity maps to a known data consumption rate. Navigation with offline maps uses roughly 50 MB per day. A one-hour video call uses about 1.5 GB. Social media with photo uploads runs around 300 MB per day. We sum those rates against your trip length to produce a total data estimate in gigabytes.
The raw usage estimate gets a 20% buffer. Travelers consistently undercount background sync, app updates, and cloud photo backups that run without prompting. We add that margin so the recommended plan does not run out on day five of a seven-day trip. If your usage estimate is under 500 MB per day, we also flag that a smaller and cheaper plan may be enough, rather than defaulting to the largest bundle.
Once we know your data needs, destination, trip length, and device type, we filter the full catalog of 5 providers across 185 destinations. The filter removes plans that are too small (below your data estimate), too short (expire before your return), or incompatible with your phone. From the remaining options, we rank by effective cost per GB, then apply three tiebreakers:
We score each provider on four dimensions weighted by how much they affect the outcome: Persona Fit Range (30%), Plan Diversity (25%), Ease (25%), and Value (20%). Our guides for business travelers, digital nomads, and study-abroad students then apply persona-specific weights to those factors. Business travelers weight persona fit and ease over value. Digital nomads balance persona fit, plan diversity, and value equally. Students prioritize value and ease. Each persona page explains which factors are weighted differently and why.
Plan pricing and availability data comes from each provider's public API or plan page and is refreshed weekly. We record the displayed price in the provider's native currency, convert to USD at the collection-date exchange rate, and archive both figures with a UTC timestamp. Device compatibility lists are checked monthly against Apple's official eSIM support page, Samsung's device specifications database, and Google's Pixel eSIM documentation. Data consumption benchmarks are based on published figures from Ericsson Mobility Reports and controlled usage logs on test devices (iPhone 15 Pro Max, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Pixel 8 Pro). The recommendation algorithm is re-validated quarterly against actual user feedback from our contact form.
Every quarter, we run the recommendation algorithm against a test set of 50 real trip profiles (varying destinations, trip lengths, device types, and usage patterns). The output is compared against what a human reviewer would recommend given the same inputs. If the algorithm disagrees with the human pick on more than 10% of test cases, we audit the ranking weights and tiebreaker logic before the next cycle. In Q2 2026, the algorithm matched the human pick in 94% of test cases.
Providers cannot pay to appear as the top recommendation. We earn affiliate commissions on some purchases, but those commissions are not a ranking input. The algorithm outputs the same result whether a provider pays us a commission or not.
When we discover stale pricing or a changed plan structure, we correct the affected data within 24 hours. If a reader reports an inaccuracy via the contact form, we verify it against the provider's current storefront within one business day. Confirmed corrections are published with a date stamp. We do not silently revise recommendation outputs.
